How To Choose The Best Dog Bed

This happens to us all, we have to buy a dog bed. Our pet has taken over the couch, even the bed. While some owners enjoy cuddling and sleeping with their dog; every dog should have a bed a place of its own to rest in one or more places around your home. With our wide selection of dog beds ina variety of colors, shapes and sizes you're sure to find the best bed for your dog. Our selections offer style and function rolled into one. If you have any questions we're always here to help. Below are a few things to think about when deciding what's right for you and your pet and decide what sleeping style is best.

Does your dog curl up, snuggle or love to lean against something soft?

Donut Dog Beds, Nests or Lounger Dog Beds would be a great choice for this dog. Several brands offer this type. This bed shape is best for dogs who like to curl or lean while resting or sleeping. The bolsters in these styles give your dog a sense of security. These beds can also help keep dogs warm. They come with bolstered sides and a center pillow. We always choose brands that covers are removable and unzip for easy cleaning in your washer.

Does your dog like to sprawl out?

These dogs need generous amounts of space and soft fill. We suggest a round, square or rectangular pillow style dog bed. If your dog likes to stretch or sprawl buy a square, rectangular, or round pillow dog bed. These beds will give your pet plenty of room to move and come in great fabrics and colors made by many designers.

Do you have limited space for a dog bed?

A rectangular, square dog bed or even a well stuffed dog mat should suit your needs. They're great space savers and work well under desks or tables, in crates or when traveling with your dog.

Does your dog have special health considerations?

In addition to style and size, dog bed fabric and fill is a key factor to consider. Machine-washable, hypoallergenic dog beds are a must for dogs that suffer from allergies. We have many Eco-friendly dog beds  that should help with allergies. We also carry a wide variety of orthopedic and memory foam beds for senior dogs or those with a disability or for a dog that's recovering from surgery.

What Size Bed Should You Get For Your Dog ?

If you find yourself in between sizes based when selecting a bed size, always go for the larger sized bed if your home and pocketbook will allow it. A quick way to find out what size bed your dog needs is to place some newspaper on the floor and put your dog on it (or old dog bed) to measure the space you need. If this doesn't work, catch your dog when he's sleeping and measure from nose to tail. You'll have to add several inches to be sure your dog won't be hanging off the bed. A general rule is that your dog's bed should be bigger and roomy enough so they can stretch their legs out for more comfort. An extra 5 inches longer and wider is a general rule of thumb. Remember you're the best judge of what your dog needs. Remember weight isn't the best way to pick the right size, you need to measure your pup.

Many of the our manufacturer's offer guides as to what size dog should fit on their beds, please bear in mind that these are approximations and you know your dog best. If you need help with figuring this out we're glad to help. You can also read our  Dog Bed & Crate Size Guide for more information.

How Do You Get a Dog Used To A New Bed?

Many dogs may seem reluctant to get into a new bed and give up their old one. It's not hard to get a dog used to their new dog bed. To help your dog get comfortable, use positive reinforcement, never punish them or be harsh about getting in the bed. Hide some dog treats in the bed, cuddle up with them on it and praise them. Putting toys, a familar blanket or your "dog towel" on it so it doesn't only have that new smell on it. Convince your pet that the new dog bed really is theirs and be sure to take away the old bed.  Most dogs can't wait to see what's in the big box that arrived - they're sure it must be for them.
